The Penn State Hazleton Honors Program provides academically talented students with learning experiences that challenge them to strive toward their full potential. Through the honors experience, students have the opportunity to become productive individuals who continuously learn, apply, and shape knowledge.
Upon completing two years in the Honors Program, students are awarded a medal at Honors Convocation to recognize their participation.
For further honors opportunities, the membership in the Schreyer Honors College, based at University Park, is available to exceptional students. Campus honors students may apply to the Schreyer Honors College at the end of their freshman year. Schreyer Scholars may complete their first two years at Penn State Hazleton.
For baccalaureate degree students, there is an opportunity to remain in the campus honors program. While at Penn State Hazleton, all honors students have the same opportunities available to them. Click here to learn more about the Schreyer Honors College.

Types of Available Courses
All students in the Campus Honors Program and Schreyers Honors College are required to complete seven honors credits per academic year. This is usually accomplished through taking one 3-credit honors course per semester, and a 1-credit independent study. If a student is unable to participate in one of the offered courses, he or she may take an Honors Option instead. Each of these is discussed in more detail below.
This unique project gives the student the ability to research and learn more in any discipline he or she is interested in. The topic may be chosen by the student, as long as it is not material covered by a regular course. During this project, the student must be supervised by a faculty member, and depending on the size of the project, may receive 1 to 3 credits for their work. Also, depending on the type of research done, the student may choose to present their results at the Research Fair, either as a poster presentation or an oral presentation. To participate, the student and supervising faculty member, must fill out the Independent Study form.
If a student is unable to schedule an honors course due to conflict, he or she may choose an honors option as an alternative. This is a modified version of one of the student's regular courses. While the student doesn't partake in a larger amount of work, it should be more in-depth than the normal course in understanding and theory. Because this is a substitute for a regular honors course, a special form must be filled out by the student and instructor early, if not before, the semester begins.
Honors are the main courses taken by honors students. They are more than regular courses and encourage more interaction and discussion in order to give students a better understanding and enriched experience. For the list of honors courses that are available, click here.
